North Miami, Florida Medicare summary: 8,440 residents aged 65 and over, 14.2% of the city, 4 hospitals in and near it, and 41 Medicare Advantage plans on the Miami-Dade County shelf for 2027.

North Miami by the numbers

Census figures for North Miami itself, not the county and not the metro area. Age and income are the two that change what a Medicare plan should look like, so they lead.

8,440 residents aged 65 and over
14.2% of North Miami is 65 or older
$51,909 median household income
4 hospitals in and near North Miami

A city where 14.2% of people are over 65 and the median household makes $51,909 is a different Medicare market from one next door with half that share. It changes which premiums are realistic, how much an out-of-pocket maximum actually matters, and whether Extra Help is worth checking before anything else.

What North Miami residents are living with

CDC estimates for adults in North Miami, shown against Miami-Dade County so you can see where this city differs. These are crude rates — the share of adults here who have the condition — because what matters when you pick a plan is what people in this city are actually being treated for. Hospitals in and near North Miami

None of these are in North Miami itself; the rest are the closest in the county. The CMS overall rating covers mortality, safety, readmission, patient experience and timeliness. It says nothing about whether a given plan has that hospital in network, which is a separate question and the one to ask before you enroll.

The North Miami ZIP codes we cover

From Keystone Point and the Biscayne Boulevard corridor, around the FIU Biscayne Bay campus. We work across all 4 North Miami ZIP codes:

33161 33167 33168 33181

A ZIP code can straddle a city line, and Medicare plan availability follows the county rather than the ZIP. If you are not sure which county your address is in, that is worth settling before you compare anything, and it takes a minute.

How and when to enroll

Four windows cover almost every situation. Enrolling at the wrong time is the most common avoidable mistake in Medicare, and some of it cannot be undone until the following year.

WindowDatesWho it is for
Annual Enrollment PeriodOctober 15 – December 7, 2026Anyone on Medicare. Change Medicare Advantage or Part D plans for coverage starting January 1, 2027. The last choice you make by December 7 is the one that takes effect.
Medicare Advantage Open EnrollmentJanuary 1 – March 31, 2027People already in a Medicare Advantage plan. One switch to another Medicare Advantage plan, or back to Original Medicare with a stand-alone Part D plan.
Non-renewal Special Enrollment PeriodDecember 8, 2026 – end of February 2027Members whose plan is not being renewed for 2027. Extra time beyond the Annual Enrollment Period.
Initial Enrollment PeriodThe 7 months around your 65th birthdayPeople new to Medicare. Late Part B and Part D enrollment carries a penalty that lasts as long as you have the coverage.

You must be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B to join a Medicare Advantage plan. Local help with any of this is us — a licensed independent broker, in person or by phone, in English, Spanish, French or Haitian Creole.

Questions about Medicare in North Miami

How many Medicare Advantage plans can I choose from in North Miami?

41 for 2027, plus 60 Special Needs Plans. Plans are sold by county, so that is the Miami-Dade County shelf and it is the same for everyone in the county. 35 of the Medicare Advantage plans carry a $0 monthly premium.

Which hospitals near North Miami are highest rated?

Of the 4 Medicare-certified acute-care hospitals in and near North Miami, CMS rates them an average of 2 stars. The table above lists each one with its rating. A high CMS rating is not the same as being in your plan’s network, though — check the specific plan before you enroll, because that is the part you cannot change until the next enrollment window.

Does where I live in North Miami change which plans I can get?

No. Every address in North Miami is in Miami-Dade County, and Medicare Advantage plans are approved county by county, so the shelf is identical across all 4 of the city’s ZIP codes. What does change by address is which doctors and hospitals are convenient, and that is what decides whether a given plan’s network works for you.

Is a $0-premium plan really free in North Miami?

No. You still pay your Medicare Part B premium to Medicare, and a $0-premium plan still has copays, coinsurance and an out-of-pocket maximum. Across Miami-Dade County for 2027 the average in-network out-of-pocket maximum is $4,555 and the highest is $9,850. A $0 premium tells you what a quiet month costs; the out-of-pocket maximum tells you what a bad year costs.

I am turning 65 in North Miami. When do I need to act?

Your Initial Enrollment Period is the seven months around your 65th birthday — the three months before the month you turn 65, that month, and the three months after. Missing it means a Part B and Part D late penalty that lasts as long as you keep the coverage, so it is worth putting in the calendar rather than trusting you will remember.

Sources and methodology

  1. PLACES: Place Data (GIS Friendly Format), 2025 release, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — data.cdc.gov resource vgc8-iyc4. Accessed 2026-10-12. Rows are pinned by place FIPS, not by name: Florida has two places called Plantation and a name lookup returns the 5,034-person one instead of the Broward city.
  2. American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates, 2023, US Census Bureau — Tables B01001 (sex by age) and B19013 (median household income), place geography. Accessed 2026-10-12. Population aged 65 and over is summed from the B01001 age brackets rather than read off a subject-table column, because subject-table column positions move between vintages.

How these numbers were produced

  • Population, age and income are from the American Community Survey for the City of North Miami itself, not the county or the metro area. Population aged 65 and over is summed from the B01001 age brackets rather than read off a subject-table column, because subject-table column positions move between vintages.
  • Health figures are CDC PLACES crude prevalence for the place of North Miami, matched by place FIPS code rather than by name. Florida has two places called Plantation, and a name match returns the wrong one.
  • Hospitals are selected by CMS certification number, not by city name: CMS spells one Broward city two different ways, several cities here have no acute-care hospital of their own, and "Miami" in the CMS file covers hospitals twenty miles apart.
  • Plan counts, premiums, deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums are for Miami-Dade County, counted directly from the CMS landscape files for both plan years. They are county figures and are labeled as such everywhere they appear, because Medicare Advantage is sold by county and there is no city-level plan data to report.
  • Medicare Advantage figures exclude Special Needs Plans, which are counted separately. Star ratings are the contract’s 2026 overall rating, the newest CMS has published; the 2027 landscape file ships with that column empty.
  • CMS publishes no city-level Medicare enrollment, so the enrollment figure on this page is for Miami-Dade County.
  • This page is a reading of public CDC, Census and CMS data, not plan advice. Benefits, networks and formularies are set by the carriers and change; the plan’s own Evidence of Coverage governs.
